Mentoring for UK MSP owners

Build the MSP you actually want to own.

I’m Paul Tomlinson. I’ve spent 30 years in the IT industry, including founding Mirus, an IT services business I grew to 100+ staff and £12m revenue before exiting in 2019. Now I mentor UK MSP owners to grow recurring revenue, mature their operations and plan for what comes next.

Sound familiar?

Most MSP owners hit the same walls.

Growth has stalled and you’re not sure which lever to pull.
Too much revenue is project work, not recurring.
The business still relies on you for everything.
You’re thinking about acquiring, or one day exiting, and want to get it right.
How I help

Three areas where the biggest gains usually are.

01

Strategy & roadmap

Clear goals for the business and for you, with a plan to hit them.

02

Recurring revenue & pricing

Pricing models, third-party services and the shift to repeatable income.

03

Operational maturity

Structure, roles, service desk and KPIs that let the business run without you.

Why me

I've sat in your chair.

My first business closed within a few years because it didn’t have recurring revenue — a hard lesson. The second, Mirus, grew past 100 people and £12m, won awards along the way, and I exited in 2019. I bring both lessons to every MSP I work with.

How it starts

Three steps to a plan.

Step 1

Get in touch

Tell me a little about your MSP.

Step 2

Getting Started Session

NDA and questionnaire first, then a deep-dive into the business and your ambitions.

Step 3

Your action plan

I write it up and present it back, then we agree how to work together.

FAQs

Questions MSP owners ask me

What does an MSP mentor do?

An MSP mentor works alongside the owner of a Managed Service Provider to set clear goals, spot risks and improve how the business sells, prices and delivers. I bring the experience of founding Mirus, growing it to 100+ staff and £12m revenue and exiting in 2019, and help you apply those lessons to your own MSP.

Who do you work with?

Owners of UK MSPs at different stages, from young businesses building their first recurring revenue to established £1m+ MSPs planning to scale, acquire or exit.

How much does MSP mentoring cost?

The Strategic Partner option is £1,500 + VAT a month and the Quarterly option is £850 + VAT a month, both with a three-month initial commitment and then month to month. Ad-hoc support is £250 an hour or £1,750 a day.

How does working together start?

Every engagement starts with a Getting Started Session. We sign an NDA, you complete a short questionnaire, and we review your ambitions, risks, structure, pricing and performance. I then write up an action plan and present it back to you.

Do you work in person or remotely?

Both. Meetings can be held in person or over Microsoft Teams, and ad-hoc advice is available by phone or email.

Can you help me sell my MSP or buy another one?

Yes. Some of the MSPs I work with are growing with an eye on acquiring others, while others are building towards an exit. Having built and exited my own MSP, I can help in either scenario.

Is there a minimum commitment?

The monthly and quarterly options have a three-month initial commitment, then continue month to month. Ad-hoc support has no ongoing commitment.
